Ever since the Transformers first came into the public eye in the early 1980s, the Bumblebee character has been a hit in the cartoons, the toys, the comics and more. Why is this?

It is probably down to the fact that Bumblebee is a bit of an Everyman character. While he's a robot from a far off planet, fans find him very easy to relate to. He's smaller than the other Transformers, and comes across as younger, more child-like, a little clumsy and very eager to please. It is these qualities in the character that has helped so many people of every generation of Transformers fans latch onto him. He's like a friend. He is also very, very courageous.

Bumblebee has been present in almost all of the Transformers' various incarnations, but it hasn't always been an easy ride for the character. At one point during the original Transformers era, Bumblebee was destroyed in battle and rebuilt as the character Goldbug. While Goldbug was popular, he didn't capture the imagination of fans as much as his previous incarnation, so it wasn't long before Bumblebee was back.

In Transformers toys, Bumblebee has always been one of the biggest attractions. With many kinds of Bumblebee action figures being released throughout the life of the Transformers range, fans have had plenty to collect. With the live action movies there have been more Bumblebee figures, but there has also been the Bumblebee Voice Changer Helmet, which has turned out to be one of the most popular Bumblebee toys ever.

With more Transformers movie action on the way and animated, video game and comic versions of the franchise still going strong, Bumblebee continues to be our humble hero, and is certainly a character where there is more than meets the eye.
